New Retail Trends in the United States: The Rise of New Offline Shopping

2023-11-09 08:52

In the retail industry of 2023, there's a blend of "innovative experiences" and a "nostalgia for tradition." For instance, as consumers return to brick-and-mortar stores, AR (Augmented Reality) is set to bridge the gap between the physical and digital worlds.

The National Retail Federation (NRF) has released its annual forecast, predicting a growth in retail sales of 4% to 6% for 2023. Overall, the NRF anticipates this year's retail sales to reach between $5.13 trillion and $5.23 trillion.

After years of rapid development in e-commerce, in-store shopping is making a comeback. More DTC (Direct to Consumer) brands are opening physical stores, as seen with Warby Parker and Allbirds in 2022. Additionally, dollar stores, discount shops, and fast-fashion brands are expanding their offline presence in the United States. Five Below has nearly 1,200 stores across the U.S., Dollarama boasts over 1,400 stores in the sparsely populated Canada, and Dollar Tree has an impressive 16,000+ stores in North America. Dollar General recently announced that it will open 1,050 new stores this year, marking the largest expansion in its history.

Large department stores like Macy's and Bloomingdale’s are also transitioning from large downtown shopping malls to smaller, more accessible stores that encourage a leisurely shopping experience.

Customers are seeking a better, cheaper, faster, and more seamless shopping journey. Developers, property owners, and retailers must rethink their strategies to create shopping experiences that attract consumers in malls, shopping districts, or individual stores. This includes easy and quick displays, minimalist packaging, self-selection of products, and self-checkout, eliminating the need for waiting and queuing, thus providing consumers with a more convenient and comfortable shopping experience. These measures also reduce labor costs, improve store operational efficiency, and enhance competitiveness.

In today's fragmented and diversified consumer touchpoints, for many retailers facing a "winter," the options are simple: adapt or perish.
